Our work on shelter focuses on documenting and reviving traditional building practices rooted in local materials and ecological wisdom. Across Rajasthan, we have been recording and supporting time-tested construction techniques that use mud, lime, and stone materials that are both sustainable and well-suited to the region’s climate.
In Dungarpur, we are documenting rammed earth construction, a practice that creates strong, thermally efficient walls using locally sourced soil. In Jaisalmer, our work centres on dry stone masonry, particularly for well construction. These wells, built without mortar, showcase the ingenuity of local masons in creating durable and water-efficient structures that have sustained communities for generations.
Through field research, technical documentation, and collaboration with local artisans, we aim to preserve and promote these traditional building practices. Our goal is to support climate-resilient, resource-efficient, and culturally rooted approaches to building.
